| Ramakrishna
Mission, Narayanpur, Bastar District, Madhya Pradesh was given
the award in 1996 for their service in the field of Education,
Medicine and Community Services in the Narayanpur area of
Bastar District deep in the forests of Madhya Pradesh.

their services to the tribal community in the fields of education
and medical help, the mission had brought about a social transformation
in what is otherwise a most inhospitable terrain. It has undertaken
an ambitious programme of integrated rural development in
the area, runs a number of schools, hostels, hospitals and
has contributed to the improvement of every facet of tribal
life from agricultural extension services, animal husbandry,
Pirmary health, environment and above all education.

| Shri
S. Jagannathan & Smt. Krishnammal Jagannathan, the Gandhian
couple had undergone imprisonment during the freedom movement
and after independence they had setup a Trust in Gandhi Gram
for assisting the poor and the needy.

| Apart
from participating in Vinobaji's Bhoodan Padyatra these couple
were responsible for distribution of over 1Lac acres of land
for 32,000 landless labourers and had also worked for peace
in a non-violent manner in the village of Kilvenmani during
the period of communal riots. They are helping the poor fisherman
by their non-violent agitation against prawn fishing on commercial
scale which leads to the salinity of large areas of agricultural
land and helping in their rehabilitation. They are also assisting
the poor by providing them with education. |
