SRI ANNA HAZARE
|
| Shri
Anna Hazare was born at Bingar near Pune in the year 1940
and hails from a poor family. On account of his straightened
circumstances of his family, Shri Hazare could not complete
his education beyond seventh standard and had to seek his
livelihood by joining the army. However, he could not long
ignore his desire to serve the poor which has been one of
his most cherished ambitions.

Shri
Anna Hazare, Relegaon siddhi, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra receiving
the Third Mahaveer Award for Excellence in the field of Social
and Community Service from Shri Karan Singh, M.P. at the Annual
Mahaveer Awards Day 1997. |
| |
| Taking
early retirement from his job in the army, he started serving
the people of Ralegaon Siddhi and was of immense assistance
to the people of that area in designing and implementing projects
of water management for providing irrigation to the parched
lands of that village. Later he extended the scope of his
social service to transforming and improving the life content
of the villagers, first by weaning them away from liquor and
later by becoming the driving force in achieving the veritable
transformation of the village by assisting the improvement
of the educational facilities in the village as also in assisting
the Harijans to lift themselves up socially and economically.
A
life long bachelor Shri Anna Hazare has adopted the entire
village as his family and has recently started tackling problems
on a wider horizon. These include his intense fight against
corruption in public life which has had considerable impact
on the society at large in the state of Maharasthra. He continues
to live a simple life confining his needs to the barest minimum.
Bhagwan
Mahaveer Foundation, has therefore conferred the Mahaveer
Award 1997, for excellence in the sphere of social and community
service on him.
